Work History

Developer Advocate

Autodesk — 3ds Max, Media & Entertainment

Sept 2022 - Aug 2026

  • Resolved 100+ developer-reported issues across C++, .NET, and Python 3ds Max plugin workflows: debugging SDK behavior, triaging via Jira, and building alternative plugins/scripts/samples to unblock external and internal developers
  • Built maxsdkcli, a Rust CLI that bootstraps 3ds Max SDK projects (C++, Python, and C#) in seconds, replacing the Visual Studio plugin wizard for C++ and manual setup for Python/C#
  • Designed and tested Bifrost Graphs for cloud execution on Autodesk Platform Services (Flow Graph Engine), reworking graphs built for local execution to run reliably in a distributed cloud environment; wrote internal developer docs for the workflow
  • Built a job-monitoring portal for cloud graph execution, showcased at Autodesk University 2024
  • Built 3ds Max plugin UIs with Qt (C++) and PySide/PyQt (Python)
  • Published 8+ technical articles on the Autodesk Developer Blog (plugin development, SDK porting, .NET upgrades) and delivered talks at the KSYP Conference, Autodesk University 2025, and IEEE events

Software Engineer (Freelance)

Upwork & Independent Consulting

Jan 2022 - Sept 2022

  • Completed 18+ freelance engineering projects (500+ billable hours) across desktop, embedded, and mobile domains, owning each project independently from scoping through delivery and support
  • Built MagicTer VPN, a cross-platform VPN client in C/C++ using OpenSSL for secure tunnelling, and Qt/QML for the desktop app with automated CI/CD release pipelines (GitHub Actions) shipping to Linux, macOS, and Windows
  • Built Yandi, a Raspberry Pi print-queue kiosk for shared computer labs: Qt/QML dashboard, C++ device layer (printer, Bluetooth, NFC, TCP interfaces), Poppler-based PDF handling, and a Flask service for Wi-Fi provisioning, replacing ad-hoc USB printing across dozens of workstations
  • Developed embedded interfaces on Raspberry Pi and ESP32 (camera + multi-sensor input), using I2C for sensor communication, Serial for debugging, and REST/MQTT for connecting devices to React-based dashboards.
  • Delivered UI work primarily in Qt/QML (C++), with mobile experience in Qt for mobile and early experience in React Native
  • Maintained a 5x repeat-client rate, with client feedback citing UI quality in Qt and reliable, on-time delivery

Chief Innovation Officer (Full-time)

The AFECS Ltd.

Aug 2020 - Aug 2022

  • Led technology strategy and engineering direction for AFECS, managing 6 direct reports (15+ engineers total across projects) and owning the full product lifecycle from client requirements to shipped software across desktop, embedded, and IoT domains
  • Led R&D through deployment of Apollo, an intelligent access-control system built during COVID-19 that verified mask-wearing and took non-contact temperature readings via an in-house-trained ML model, combined with RFID access, running on a custom-built Apollo OS; later customized for additional customer deployments
  • Built the AFECS Vehicle Management & Tracking System, a custom fleet-tracking platform delivering real-time vehicle telemetry through a live dashboard and companion mobile app
  • Set technical direction across C++, Qt/QML, Python, and embedded Linux, evaluating and selecting tech stacks and hardware vendors for new projects, and leading partner/vendor negotiations
  • Built IoT dashboards in Qt/Felgo for desktop and mobile and React for web
  • Managed and mentored the engineering team, establishing code standards, review processes, and delivery workflows

Research Assistant & Data Analyst (Contract)

PSRM Consultants

Feb 2022 - Jun 2022

  • Led a field research team of 18 (plus 2 office-based) on a hospital equipment study across Kenyan health facilities, digitizing asset registries for 5,000+ pieces of equipment across 22+ hospitals nationally
  • Built the data-collection pipeline using JotForm and Google Forms, with automated sync to a PostgreSQL backend, replacing paper-based tracking
  • Ran statistical analysis in Python (pandas) and Excel on equipment availability and condition, producing reports and client advisory findings for project stakeholders

Lead Engineering Team

TibaVent Project

Mar 2020 - Sept 2021

  • Led both the software and electrical engineering teams within a 15-member group that built Kenya's first locally manufactured mechanical ventilator during COVID-19
  • Developed the Qt/QML touchscreen control application, communicating over serial with a custom STM32-based PCB to read and control pressure, flow, volume, and vital-sign parameters
  • Built the C++ central monitoring server, aggregating live data from all deployed ventilators and enabling doctors to remotely view, monitor alarms, and adjust parameters on specific machines via tablet, governed by access rules
  • Passed full regulatory approval: Kenya Bureau of Statistics (KEBS) electrical and medical ventilator standards testing, Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), and Ethics Review Committee clearance
  • Recognized with UN Kenya Person of the Year 2020

Software Engineer (Part-time)

Chebui Agrovet

Jan 2019 - Dec 2020

  • Designed and built a Point-of-Sale system in Qt/QML (C++) with a PostgreSQL backend — my first end-to-end delivery for a paying client, covering interface design, database schema, and sales/inventory logic
  • Evolved the UI from Qt Widgets to QML over multiple releases, and added Python tooling for scripting and report generation
  • Integrated the system into existing store operations for smooth staff adoption, training 30+ staff across locations
  • In continuous production use since 2019 across 8+ stores, now on its 7th major version, processing over 1M KES in monthly sales

Education

MSc Computer Science

University of East London, UK

Sept 2023 - Apr 2026

  • Dissertation: MantisBase, an embeddable C++20 Backend-as-a-Service delivering auto-generated REST APIs, JWT auth, and SSE streaming in one portable binary; released as open source (30+ releases, mantisbase.com).
  • Focus areas: advanced software engineering, cloud computing, data analytics, and AI & machine vision, completed alongside full-time engineering work.

BSc Biomedical Engineering

Kenyatta University, Kenya

Aug 2016 - Feb 2022

  • Led development of TIBAVENT, Kenya's first locally designed mechanical ventilator (Qt/C++ on embedded Linux); built the clinical UI and the real-time control layer; the work earned UN Person of the Year 2020 and a Head of State Commendation (HSC), Civilian Division.
  • Contributed hardware design and firmware to a 1U CubeSat with the Kenya Space Agency; power budgeting, comms protocols, and fault-tolerant embedded software and to the DLP2 learning tablet programme.
  • Grounding in electrical circuits, embedded systems, control and instrumentation, and medical device design; the origin of the low-level, systems-first approach I still bring to C++ and infrastructure work.
